Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex Review

Pro Complex Protein 4.4lb

Pro Complex from Optimum Nutrition is a protein blend supplement. I briefly mentioned it in my 5 part comparison of 25 protein supplements. It was compared with several other protein blends such as ProPeptide and Protein Plus here, and Pro Complex came out on top.

This is a protein blend that I use all the time like 100% Whey, but for different purposes. I use Pro Complex mainly as a night time protein. Taken with milk, you get a good source of protein, vitamins, and some minerals.

Pro Complex is a blend of whey protein concentrate, isolate, hydrolyzed whey peptides, and egg albumen. So what are all these different types of proteins involved?

Whey protein concentrate and isolate is talked about somewhat in this article, so no need to explain any more here. Hydrolyzed whey is a whey protein that has had some of its amino acid peptide bonds broken into shorter chains allowing for better absorption. Hydrolyzed whey protein is talked about in some detail in this article on whey protein processing methods.

Some advantages of Hydrolyzed Whey:

  • The most digestible whey protein for human consumption
  • Partially pre-digested for better absorption by humans
  • Protein molecules are split into smaller group called peptides
Egg albumen is the dried whites of eggs (AKA egg white). This contains more than half of the protein in a whole egg, and unlike the egg yolk, it does not contain the fats and cholesterol. You can read about egg proteins in much more detail here. Egg protein is referred to as the 'perfect' protein - it scores 1.0 on the PDCAA score, and 100 on biological value. Egg protein contains all the essential amino acids required by the body.

Optimum Pro Complex Taste Test

Pro Complex is one fantastic tasting protein blend! It comes with the standard chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. So far, I've only tried the chocolate flavor... Well, it just tastes so damn good that I've stuck with it! Procomplex is a very nice tasting, not too sweet, milk shake like (if you use milk), and very smooth tasting protein shake. I'd give it a 9.8/10.

It mixes very easily with a shaker bottle, and it's also 'instantized' - so that it mixes just with a spoon. I've tried this method once (with a glass and spoon), and was surprised to find that it did completely mix as promised, and there were no clumps. However, I still prefer using a shaker bottle.

ProComplex is a fantastic protein blend, and is definitely worth a try!
