ISS Oh Yeah! Protein Bars Review

Oh Yeah! It Tastes Good...

Protein bars offer convenience and are easy to carry around for those who find taking a shaker cup of protein powder around with them impractical. With protein bars, there's no mess, no fuss, and if the bar is decent tasting, it's like eating a chocolate bar. But there sure are a lot, I mean a lot, of different brands and makes of protein bars on the market, and some of these taste terrible. Others might actually taste good, but then you look at its nutrition facts and see that it's either loaded with carbohydrates or fat, or both. There are also various protein bars that taste quite decent, but while some users may really like its taste, others may not enjoy it so much. Rarely do you find a protein bar with a decent nutrition profile that comes with flavors that most would enjoy.

The Oh Yeah! protein bars from ISS research is one such protein bar that comes with a decent nutrition profile and tastes fantastic. I think most who tries the Oh Yeah bars will agree that it's a fantastic tasting protein bar. It also comes in two sizes - a 45g bar for a nice little snack, and a larger 85g sized protein bar for those who want the extra nutrition. These bars do contain peanuts, so individuals with nut allergies need to be aware of that.

ISS Oh Yeah Bars Nutrition Facts

Below is the nutrition facts for the 45g Oh Yeah! protein bar:

Calories 180
Calories From Fat 60
Total Fat 7g
Saturated Fat 4g
Trans Fat 0g
Polyunsaturated Fat 0g
Monounsaturated Fat 1.5g
Cholesterol 5mg
Sodium 55mg
Potassium 50mg
Total Carbohydrate 17g
Dietary Fiber 1g
Sugars 5g
Sugar Alcohol 8g
Protein 15g
Vitamin A 0%
Vitamin C 0%
Calcium 6%
Iron 4%
Phosphorus

The 85g bar is almost twice as big, and so it contains more of everything. Below is a quick summary of the 85g Oh Yeah Bar nutrition facts. The nutrition information varies slightly depending on the flavor you choose:

Calories 340-380
Fat 14-19g
Carbohydrates 27-32g
Protein 27-30g

I think the fat content is slightly on the high side, and it contains acceptable amounts of carbohydrates, with a good amount of proteins per serving. The protein blend consists of whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate, milk protein isolate, milk protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate. So what you have is a bit of a time-release protein formula where it contains proteins that digest and absorb at different rates. The one issue I do have with ISS Oh Yeah! bars is that it contains Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (PHVO).  PHVO is not very often used in protein bars these days, and you won't find many protein bars that use hydrogenated oils. Many protein bars even go out of their way to advertise the fact that NO hydrogenated oils are used. Hydrogenated oil is a major source of trans fatty acids, which among other health issues, increases the risk of heart problems by increasing LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. So I'm not sure why ISS decided to go with hydrogenated oils here.

Other than that, I have no other issues with the Oh Yeah! bars, but these are by far some of the best tasting protein bars! The taste is amazing, and you have to try it to believe it. Who knows, maybe it's the hydrogenated oils that makes things taste better. It comes in several different flavors including almond fudge brownie, cookie caramel, chocolate caramel, peanut butter caramel, peanut butter and strawberry, and vanilla toffee. The almond fudge brownie is probably the best tasting - it's simply fantastic, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better tasting protein bar. The other flavors that I've tried are cookie caramel, peanut butter caramel, and chocolate caramel. These all taste great... just like eating chocolate bars. These flavors can be a little addicting, so watch yourselves. =)

ISS Oh Yeah nutrition bars comes in 45g and 85g bar sizes. The 45g bars work out to Roughly $1.30 per bar, while the 85g bars workout to $1.92 per bar. So for about 50% more cost, you get almost twice the bar - the 85g is definitely a better buy. If you can withstand the temptations, just eat half of a 85g bar, but once you start, you might not be able to stop until it's all gone. If you're looking for a fantastic tasting protein bar, then give Oh Yeah! bars a shot.
